Food: this is a must try place in South Bay, you really can't miss out on it if you're visiting the area! I've been coming here since elementary school, and it tastes so so so good every single time. The free baguette appetizer is amazingly soft inside and pairs well with butter. My favorite is the original seafood gratin, which takes a little longer (20 minutes) to prepare, but it's hot steamy and creamy and filled with delicious bits of shrimp and pasta, ugh you really need to try. My close second favorite is Japanese style cod roe pasta with squid and seaweed in spicy sauce (but does not actually taste spicy lol), I'm a sucker for anything cod roe hehe. I've also tried barca d'oro, clam sauce, white sauce, mushroom and sea urchin, carbonara, hot garlic, avocado cream cheese (I might as well be naming the whole menu at this point), and everything, I mean everything, is absolutely delicious and did not disappoint Price: around $11-15 per pasta dish, which is super fair pricing for such great pasta, the portion is perfect, leaves me full but not uncomfortable Ambiance: small corner restaurant, outside is painted in iconic true blue color with big red bear logo, the inside is clean and cozy. They have bar areas in the front and next to the kitchen, small 3-5 ish tables. It can get really busy here, especially given the small limited space, but well worth the wait Service: nice japanese waitresses, they're so nice and friendly and attentive, they never fuss about me asking for more bread or butter. The chef who cooks in the kitchen is super cool, very good at his job for sure, so efficient, it's so fun watching him work Parking: there's a free parking lot on the back side of the restaurant building, turn into Denker Ave. I can usually find a space here or just residential street parking when it's full, no issues here
Spoon House has quickly become one of my favorite dining spots, and my recent visit only solidified this sentiment. I indulged in their Cod Roe with Sea Urchin and Squid, and it was an absolute delight. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and each bite was a symphony of seafood goodness. Without hesitation, I give this dish a solid 5 out of 5. The Bolognese with Meatball also impressed, earning a respectable 4 out of 5. The hearty sauce paired excellently with the tender meatball, creating a satisfying comfort dish that left me feeling content. One of the standout aspects of Spoon House is their affordability. Despite the high quality of their dishes, the prices are incredibly reasonable, making it an accessible option for those craving a taste of excellence without breaking the bank. Additionally, the $1 salad option is a fantastic value add-on that shouldn't be overlooked. I visited on a Tuesday night and was pleased to find the restaurant comfortably quiet, allowing for a relaxed dining experience without the hustle and bustle often associated with popular eateries.
Very reasonable prices and friendly staff, the pastas were a bit plain imo but it's definitely worth a try if you are in the area looking for a quick bite. We got the carbonara and the sea urchin cream spaghetti, they were both just OK and we just ended up combining them and the amalgamated carbonara mushroom sea urchin pasta was pretty good. Complimentary bread was nice too. Taste 7.5/10 Value 8/10
My biggest regret being a South Bay native is not discovering Spoon House sooner. I came here by my friend's recommendation years ago and it's been my go to spot when I want fusion pasta. Spoon House specializes in Japanese and Italian fusion pasta, with many pastas combining seafood, uni, seaweed and spaghetti. My go to has been the tarako and butter sauce spaghetti with uni, seaweed, and squid. The pasta is buttery and rich, and the portions are generous as well. If you've had Akane Chaya across the street, Spoon House will be very similar experience.
Lunch counter with quick service. The original uni pasta is here (per some of the other reviews) and it was lovely and served at perfect temperature. Great flavor and good serving size. Bread was soft but butter was cold. They've raised their prices quite a bit over the years and it seems overpriced to sit at a lunch bar for spaghetti. Service was great for a quick bite and it got busy a few minutes past noon. The place is small so not sure I'd bring a group but I Enjoyed my quick meal!
Food is so fresh, made in front of you and steaming hot yummmmmm. Greeted with great customer service. Ambiance is great for my little family. I love this place
Spoon House is my go to Japanese Italian fusion spot. It manages to hit a sweet spot between have the right amount of umami and flavor while never feeling super heavy. Plus, the price given the quality and portion size is top notch. The restaurant itself is on the smaller size and tends to fill up quickly during meal times, leaving those that didn't manage to snag a table to wait outside. However, it is well worth the wait. The service is prompt and helpful. Plus, the smaller setting gives a homey and comfy feel once seated. Some of my favorite dishes from here include: Japanese Style Code Roe and Butter Sauce: umami and not too heavy--this dish is unique for the area and is honestly something I find myself ordering when I'm back home Hot Garlic and Seasoned Mushroom; extremely umami and full of garlicky mushroom goodness--this dish is great when you want something that packs a little more oomph $1 Salad: for one dollar, the size and variety is great; I always get this along with whatever pasta I'm feeling
The Best Fusion Food in Town.. Japanese pasta is the bomb! My girlfriend and I went here for our weekly date night and oh boy she loves it :) The ambiance is perfect for a casual date night since this place is not full on during weeknights dinner time. This place reminds me of mom and pops house that modelled into a restaurant (cozy and homey). My girlfriend recently went to Japan so this reminded her how polite and helpful are the people by their customer service. It is on point! and I cannot think of a better place in mind. I ordered their shitake mushroom seafood pasta, which is sooo good and fresh. It has furikake seasoning on top and a lot of shreded seaweed. The clams are flavorful and fits right on this light pasta. Their pasta is not heavy at all and felt pretty lean after eating honestly. Unlike the typical Italian pasta, which is heary and feels like having a food coma after, this fusion dishis have light ingredients without overpowering the sauce flavor. My girlfriend ordered a similar version of their seafood pasta which is a sea urchin/ squid ink. It has a similar texture to my dish and a lot of seafood base flavor on it. She loves it! and I will take that as a successful date night :) We orderd their bottled Saporro beer after for our refreshment to down the flavor and to finished up our meal. Overall, I love this place and a great recommendation to all pasta lovers. PS: They only have 2 locations: Here in Gardena, Cali and Tokyo.. so that was a treat :)
Spoon House is a Japanese style Italian restaurant. A gem in the Torrance area! They have both traditional Italian pasta dishes and Japanese style Italian dishes. We got the spicy tomato and the Japanese style clam sauce spaghetti. The menu is broken down by the type of sauce and toppings. Most dishes are served over spaghetti but there are some typical a Japanese diner style dishes like "special steak dinner" amongst others. Service is quick and a lot of tables have a view of the open concept kitchen. Pricing is also reasonable with most dishes being under $15 per plate. The one dollar salad is a great value and good for sharing! Can't recommend this place enough especially if you are craving for the unique twist that Japanese Italian provides.
